1963 Press Photo Peasants at Colorful Marketplace in Bucharest, Rumania This is an original press photo. Rugged Peasants and Colorful Marketplace still retains the old flavor of Bucharest. Rumania Offers Tourist Trips - The entry is forbidding, almost severe. Two soldiers, white-gloved and well pressed, stand at the gangway of the arriving plane and examine your passport before you set one foot down on Rumanian soil. The baggage declaration is tediously long, and the customs inspection minute. But, after that, friendship glows and things move easily. Rumania is in the tourist business, too. Visitors are brought in to the handsome offices of Carpati, the government tourist office, walled with glass, spread with modern furniture, and equipped with a bar. To those who can produce a foreign passport the bar sells American cigarettes at $5 a carton. Even at that price there is hardly anything you could give a Rumanian that would make him happier. The demand for capitalist imperialist butts is so great you could probably buy Transylvania for a truckload. Photo is dated 06-15-1963. |
